Colter's Hell is a geothermal area just west of Cody, named after explorer John Colter who described its fiery features in the early 1800s. Unlike Yellowstone's geysers, this site offers a more intimate experience with steaming hot springs, bubbling mud pots, and vibrant mineral terraces in shades of orange, yellow, and green. A short boardwalk trail leads visitors safely through the thermal features, with interpretive signs explaining the geology and history. The area is less crowded than nearby national parks, providing a peaceful encounter with Wyoming's volcanic activity.

Don't miss

  • Walk the boardwalk past steaming hot springs and fumaroles.
  • Photograph the colorful mineral deposits and terraces.
  • Read about John Colter's 1807 exploration of the area.
