Horse Guards Parade is a large open space behind the Horse Guards building, originally a tiltyard for Tudor jousting. Today it is the setting for the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony in June, marking the sovereign's official birthday with a military display. At other times, visitors can walk across the gravel expanse and enjoy views of the surrounding government buildings, including the Old Admiralty and the Banqueting House.
