Kingsgate is one of Winchester's two surviving medieval gates, notable for the small church of St. Swithun-upon-Kingsgate built into its upper level. This unusual arrangement, where a place of worship sits atop a city gate, is rare in England. Visitors can walk through the archway, which once formed part of the city's defensive walls, and then climb a narrow staircase to the church, which still holds regular services. The gate offers a quiet, atmospheric glimpse into Winchester's layered history, where the sacred and the secular meet.

Don't miss

  • See the ancient wooden doors and portcullis grooves preserved in the gatehouse
