Camber Castle is a striking 16th-century artillery fort, one of Henry VIII's chain of coastal defenses. Built between 1512 and 1539, it was designed to protect the Rye anchorage from French invasion. The castle's unusual low, circular shape and thick walls were built to withstand cannon fire. Today, managed by English Heritage, it stands isolated in the Romney Marsh, accessible via a footpath from the village of Camber. Visitors can explore the interior chambers, climb to the gun platforms, and enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and sea. The castle is a Scheduled Monument and a haven for wildlife.

Don't miss

  • Climb the gun platforms for panoramic views of the Rye Bay and Romney Marsh.
  • Explore the well-preserved Tudor interior, including the central courtyard and guardrooms.
  • Walk the nature trail through the marshland, spotting birds and wildflowers.
