St Mary's Church is one of Knaresborough's oldest buildings, founded in the 12th century. Its standout feature is the Norman doorway, richly carved with chevron and beakhead motifs, which survives intact. The church sits in a leafy churchyard that contains ancient gravestones and the remains of a medieval cross. Inside, the simple nave and chancel retain a sense of antiquity, with some original stonework. It is less visited than the larger parish church, offering a more tranquil glimpse into the town's medieval past.

Don't miss

  • Admire the Norman doorway's intricate stone carvings.
  • Wander the historic graveyard, which includes a medieval cross base.
