St Mawes Castle is a remarkably intact Tudor artillery fort built by Henry VIII to defend against invasion. Perched on a headland, it offers panoramic vistas across the Fal Estuary and out to the English Channel. Visitors can explore the circular keep, gun platforms, and exhibitions on Tudor military life. The castle’s clover-leaf shape and thick stone walls make it a distinctive example of coastal defense architecture. Its position also provides a perfect spot for photography and picnicking while watching boats navigate the estuary.

Don't miss

  • Climb to the top of the keep for 360-degree views of the coast and estuary.
  • Examine the original Tudor gun ports and cannons on the lower gun deck.
  • Walk the ramparts and imagine the castle’s role in defending against the Spanish Armada.
