The Ouse Washes is an internationally important wetland stretching between Ely and Downham Market. This flat, open landscape of flooded meadows and ditches attracts huge numbers of birds, especially in winter when thousands of swans, ducks, and geese gather. Visitors can walk along the banks of the Hundred Foot Drain and the Old Bedford River, enjoying expansive views and excellent birdwatching opportunities. The reserve is managed by the RSPB and Wildlife Trusts.

Don't miss

  • Winter flocks of Bewick's and whooper swans
  • Walking routes along the riverbanks and washes
  • RSPB Welney Wetland Centre for viewing hides and exhibits
