Kalepolepo Fishpond is a historic loko iʻa (fishpond) built by early Hawaiians using lava rocks. The pond's walls enclose a tidal area where fish were once raised for the community. Today, it's a peaceful bird sanctuary frequented by native waterbirds like ʻalae keʻokeʻo (Hawaiian coot) and kōlea (Pacific golden plover). Visitors can walk along the perimeter path, read interpretive signs, and watch the birds feed in the shallow waters. The site offers a quiet contrast to Wailea's resorts, connecting visitors to Maui's pre-contact ingenuity.

Don't miss

  • Walk the shoreline path and observe Hawaiian stilts and coots
  • See the reconstructed stone wall and imagine the ancient fishpond in use
