Fairbank was a bustling railroad stop during Tombstone's silver boom, but faded after the mines closed. Today it's a state historic site with several original buildings open to the public. Visitors can walk through the 1880s schoolhouse, the post office, and the general store, which still has shelves stocked with period goods. The old railroad depot is a shell, but interpretive signs explain the town's role in shipping silver. Trails along the San Pedro River offer birdwatching and views of the surrounding desert.

Don't miss

  • Step inside the fully restored Fairbank Schoolhouse, complete with wooden desks and a potbellied stove.
  • Walk the short trail to the ruins of the railroad depot, where silver was once loaded onto trains.
  • Spot migratory birds along the San Pedro River, a critical riparian corridor in the desert.
