The Sturgeon Bay Bridge, a historic bascule (drawbridge) spanning the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal, has connected the two halves of the city since 1931. This steel-and-concrete bridge lifts its two leaves to allow tall ships and barges to pass between Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Visitors can watch the mechanism from a small park on the west side, where interpretive signs explain the bridge's engineering. The bridge is a beloved local landmark and a testament to the area's maritime economy.

Don't miss

  • Watch the bridge lift from the west-side park, a 10-minute cycle that happens frequently in summer.
  • Photograph the bridge's Art Deco control house and steel trusses.
  • Walk or bike across the bridge for a close-up view of the canal and passing boats.
