The Red Cones are two volcanic cinder cones located south of Mammoth Lakes, easily accessible via a short, moderately steep trail. The reddish-brown color of the cones comes from oxidized iron in the volcanic rock, making them a striking feature in the landscape. The hike to the top takes about 30 minutes and offers expansive views of the surrounding forest, Mammoth Mountain, and the distant Sierra crest. Interpretive signs along the trail explain the volcanic history of the area. This is a great spot for a quick, rewarding hike with minimal effort, suitable for families and casual hikers.
