Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo, situated in a lush rainforest setting just south of Hilo, is the only zoo in the United States located within a natural tropical rainforest. The zoo features a variety of animals including the endangered Hawaiian nēnē (goose), pygmy hippos, tigers, and colorful parrots. Meandering pathways take visitors through dense foliage, past ponds and streams, offering an immersive experience that blends wildlife viewing with the serene beauty of the rainforest. The zoo also has a petting zoo and a playground, making it family-friendly.
