Mavericks Beach, located just north of Half Moon Bay, is one of the world's most famous big-wave surf breaks. During winter, Pacific storms generate waves that can exceed 60 feet, drawing top big-wave surfers from around the globe. The beach itself offers a rugged coastline with tide pools and scenic views, but the main draw is watching the surf from the bluff or joining a guided surf-watching tour. The annual Mavericks Invitational (held when conditions permit) brings international attention, but even without a contest, the raw power of the ocean here is awe-inspiring. Visitors should come prepared for cold, windy conditions and respect the dangerous surf.

Don't miss

  • Watch expert surfers ride 40- to 60-foot waves from the bluff viewpoint
  • Explore tide pools at low tide along the rocky shore
  • Photograph dramatic winter sunsets over the Pacific
