Mount Emmons, locally called the 'Red Lady' for its reddish hue at sunset, is a prominent landmark near Crested Butte. Its slopes hold a rich mining history, with remnants of old prospecting tunnels and claims. Hikers can tackle the challenging Red Lady Trail, which climbs through alpine tundra to a summit with sweeping views of the Elk Mountains and the town below. The mountain is also a symbol of conservation, as efforts have long sought to protect it from further mining development.
