St Catherine's Island sits just off Tenby's South Beach, connected to the mainland by a causeway that emerges only at low tide. The island is dominated by a Grade II* listed Palmerston Fort, built in the 1860s to defend against a feared French invasion. Visitors can cross the sandy causeway and climb to the fort, which now houses a small museum and offers sweeping views of the Pembrokeshire coast and the town. The island itself is a haven for seabirds, and the walk across the beach at low tide is an adventure in itself.

Don't miss

  • Walk across the tidal causeway at low tide to reach the island
  • Explore the Victorian fort and its gun emplacements
  • Enjoy panoramic views of Tenby's beaches and coastline from the fort
