Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea, St Andrews Castle was a bishop's residence and a stronghold during the Scottish Reformation. Its most remarkable feature is the mine and countermine tunnel, dug during a 1546 siege, visitors can crawl through the narrow passage. The castle also has a bottle dungeon carved from rock, and the remains of a great hall and kitchen. The site offers stunning coastal views and a tangible sense of siege warfare.

Don't miss

  • Peer into the bottle dungeon, a claustrophobic prison carved from solid rock
  • Walk the battlements for views of the West Sands and the North Sea
