Old Sarum Castle is the ruined Norman fortress within the larger Old Sarum site. Built after the Conquest, it was a royal stronghold and administrative center. Today, visitors can climb the motte to see the foundations of the keep and towers. The castle's strategic position atop an earlier Iron Age fortification is evident from the deep ditches and high earth banks. Interpretive signs illustrate the castle's layout and history, including its use as a parliament meeting place. The site is sparse but evocative, with sheep grazing on the slopes.
