Winchelsea is a beautifully preserved medieval town perched on a hill, originally laid out as a planned settlement in the 13th century. Its three ancient gates, Strand Gate, Pipewell Gate, and New Gate, still stand, framing the approach to the town. The hilltop St Thomas the Martyr Church, with its striking interior, and the Winchelsea Museum offer glimpses into its storied past as a Cinque Port. Wandering its quiet streets, visitors feel transported to a bygone era of maritime trade and medieval life.
