Doom Bar is a shifting sandbar that stretches across the entrance to the Camel Estuary, creating a hazardous obstacle for boats entering Padstow harbour. Its name comes from a Cornish legend about a mermaid's curse, and it has caused numerous shipwrecks over the centuries. Today, the sandbar is a dramatic natural feature visible from the coastal path and beaches. At low tide, it emerges as a vast expanse of sand, popular with walkers and birdwatchers. The Doom Bar is also the namesake of a famous ale brewed by Sharp's Brewery in nearby Rock.

Don't miss

  • View the sandbar from the South West Coast Path or Stepper Point
  • Walk on the exposed sand at low tide (with caution for tides)
  • Sample Doom Bar ale at a Padstow pub
