The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art occupies a former flour mill on the south bank of the River Tyne, its industrial shell transformed into a vast, light-filled gallery space. Visitors explore multiple floors of rotating exhibitions featuring works by international and British artists, from large installations to video and mixed media. The building itself is a highlight, with raw concrete interiors and panoramic windows that frame the Quayside and bridges. A viewing platform on the top floor provides one of the best free vantage points in Newcastle, while the ground-floor shop and café make for a relaxed break.

Don't miss

  • View the current temporary exhibitions – the programme changes several times a year, so there's always something new.
  • Ride the external glass elevator for dramatic views of the Tyne and the Millennium Bridge.
  • Visit the top-floor viewing platform for a panoramic perspective of Newcastle and Gateshead's skyline.
