Victoria Embankment is a major thoroughfare and pedestrian promenade along the north bank of the River Thames in London, stretching from the Houses of Parliament to Blackfriars Bridge. Built in the 1860s, it reclaimed land from the river and provided a new sewer system. Today, it's a popular spot for leisurely strolls, offering uninterrupted views of the South Bank, including the London Eye, the National Theatre, and the Oxo Tower. The Embankment is lined with mature plane trees, ornate lampposts, and benches where visitors can watch river traffic. Key features include the Victoria Embankment Gardens, the Egyptian-style Cleopatra's Needle (an ancient obelisk), and several memorials. It's also a major transport hub, with Embankment tube station providing access to the District, Circle, Bakerloo, and Northern lines.

A bit of history
The Embankment was constructed between 1864 and 1870 under the supervision of engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, as part of a project to improve London's sanitation and create a new riverside road. It also housed the District Railway (now part of the London Underground) beneath its surface.
