King's Cross is one of London's great Victorian railway terminuses, the historic gateway to the north of England and Scotland, and, thanks to a major restoration, one of its most spectacular. Behind the dignified 1852 brick facade, the dramatic Western Concourse (added in 2012) sweeps overhead in a vast, white, fan-like steel-and-glass canopy, one of the most photographed modern station interiors in Europe. For fans of Harry Potter, the station is also home to the famous Platform 9¾, where a luggage trolley appears to vanish into the wall, a hugely popular photo spot, with an adjacent Harry Potter shop.

It's a working station, so you pass through rather than tour, but the architecture, the Platform 9¾ photo op, and the buzzing shops and eateries make it worth a look. It sits beside the equally grand St Pancras International, and the regenerated King's Cross district behind has become a lively area of squares, canals, and dining.

A bit of history

Opened in 1852 as the London terminus of the Great Northern Railway, King's Cross served the East Coast Main Line to the north. After decades of decline, a major 2000s–2010s restoration added the soaring Western Concourse and revitalised the surrounding district into one of London's most dynamic new quarters.
