Kendal Castle stands on a grassy mound overlooking the town, its 13th-century walls and towers now in picturesque ruin. Built by the Lancaster family, the castle was later abandoned and fell into decay. Today, visitors can explore the remaining stonework, climb the towers for sweeping views of the Kent Valley and Lakeland fells, and enjoy a peaceful picnic on the site. It's a short, steep walk from the town centre.

Don't miss

  • Climb the surviving towers for 360-degree views of Kendal and the Lake District.
  • Explore the remains of the great hall and domestic quarters.
  • Walk the castle's perimeter for a sense of its medieval defenses.
