Grasmere lake is a small, serene body of water set in a valley surrounded by fells, including the famous Helm Crag. It's a quintessential Lake District scene, often painted and photographed. The lake is popular for gentle circular walks, with a well-trodden path that takes about an hour. Visitors can also rent rowboats in summer to enjoy the water from a different perspective. The lake is fed by the River Rothay and is home to a variety of birdlife. Its proximity to the village makes it an easy and rewarding destination for all ages.

Don't miss

  • Walk the 1.5-mile circular path around the lake, offering classic views of the surrounding fells.
  • Rent a rowboat from the boathouse (seasonal) and paddle on the tranquil water.
  • Picnic by the shore near the village end, with views of Helm Crag and the Langdale Pikes.
