A bit of history
Potteric Carr was once a vast fenland, drained for agriculture in the 18th century. In the 1970s, the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust began restoring the area, creating the wetlands and reedbeds seen today. It opened as a nature reserve in 1975 and has since become a key site for bird conservation in South Yorkshire.
