Castle Combe Castle is a medieval motte-and-bailey fortress, now in ruins, that once dominated the landscape above the village. Built shortly after the Norman Conquest, it offers visitors a glimpse into early defensive architecture. The site consists of a large earthen mound (motte) and a bailey enclosure, with remnants of stone walls and ditches. From the hilltop, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the village below. It's a peaceful spot for history enthusiasts and hikers, though little remains of the original structure beyond earthworks and foundations.

Don't miss

  • Climb the motte for sweeping views over Castle Combe and the Bybrook Valley
  • Explore the earthworks and imagine the castle's medieval layout
  • Combine with a walk along the nearby footpaths through woodland and fields
