Canterbury Castle is a ruined Norman keep built in the 12th century, once a royal fortress. Now standing in a public park, the roofless stone structure gives visitors a sense of medieval military architecture. The castle's interior is closed for safety, but you can walk around its exterior and read interpretive panels. The adjacent Dane John Gardens offer a pleasant setting for a picnic. It's a quiet, atmospheric spot away from the main tourist crowds.

Don't miss

  • View the massive Norman keep from all sides.
  • Read the history panels explaining the castle's role.
  • Combine with a stroll in Dane John Gardens.
