Palm Jumeirah is Dubai's most famous feat of engineering, an enormous, palm-tree-shaped artificial island reclaimed from the Arabian Gulf, so vast its shape is visible from space. A masterpiece of ambition, it's built as a central 'trunk' lined with apartments, branching 'fronds' of luxury villas, and a sweeping outer 'crescent' breakwater home to grand resorts. The island has become a destination in its own right, anchored by the iconic Atlantis, The Palm resort with its waterpark and aquarium at the tip, plus beach clubs, the Nakheel Mall and Palm Tower (with The View observation deck), The Pointe waterfront, and a monorail running the length of the trunk.

It encapsulates modern Dubai's scale and luxury, a place to stay, dine, hit the beach, or simply marvel at the engineering. Ride the monorail for the best ground-level sense of it, or head up The View for the aerial perspective. Free to visit and explore the public areas; resorts, attractions, and dining cost separately. Allow at least half a day.

A bit of history

Palm Jumeirah was constructed in the 2000s by Nakheel, using millions of tonnes of sand and rock dredged from the Gulf, with no concrete or steel in the island's base. The first of Dubai's ambitious palm-shaped islands to be completed, it became a global symbol of the city's audacious development.
