The Independence Monument stands at the center of a roundabout on Kampala's Nile Avenue, a striking concrete sculpture resembling a woman holding a child aloft, or, as some interpret, a figure unwrapping itself from chains. Unveiled in 1962 to commemorate Uganda's independence from Britain, it was designed by Gregory Maloba, a Kenyan-born artist. Visitors can walk around the monument, read the commemorative plaque, and photograph the landmark against the backdrop of the city's skyline. It's a quick stop that offers a tangible connection to Uganda's modern history.

Don't miss

  • Observe the abstract sculpture's dual symbolism of freedom and new life.
  • Read the inscription on the base explaining the monument's significance.
  • Capture photos of the monument with Kampala's skyline in the background.
