The Churches of Göreme, located within the Göreme Open Air Museum, are a cluster of rock-cut churches and chapels dating from the 10th to 12th centuries. These monastic structures were carved directly into the soft volcanic tuff and adorned with vivid frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible. The most famous is the Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise), which retains its brilliant colors due to limited light exposure. Visitors can walk through the complex, entering each church to admire the art and architecture, and gain insight into the spiritual life of Byzantine monks who sought refuge here.

Don't miss

  • Admire the vivid frescoes in the Dark Church, including the Ascension and Last Supper scenes.
  • See the Apple Church (Elmalı Kilise) with its unique dome and cross-in-square plan.
  • Explore the refectory and monastic cells carved into the rock.
