The Church of Mary, also known as the Double Church, is an early Christian basilica located within the Ephesus archaeological site. It is historically significant as the venue for the Third Ecumenical Council in 431 AD, which affirmed the title of Mary as Theotokos. Today, visitors can explore the remains of its two parallel naves, a baptistery, and mosaic floors. The site offers a serene atmosphere and a tangible connection to early church history, distinct from the larger structures of Ephesus.
Don't miss
- The remains of the double-nave basilica, one of the oldest dedicated to Mary
- The baptistery with its cruciform font, still visible among the ruins
- The peaceful setting away from the main crowds, ideal for reflection
