Zelve Monastery is a sprawling rock-cut monastic complex in the Pasabag valley, abandoned in the 20th century. It features multiple cave churches, living quarters, and a distinctive three-story fairy chimney with a tunnel. Visitors can climb through the interconnected rooms and chapels, seeing faded frescoes and carved religious symbols. The site offers a more rugged, less restored experience compared to Göreme Open Air Museum, giving a sense of the ascetic life of Byzantine monks.

Don't miss

  • Climb through the three-story fairy chimney with its internal staircase and tunnel.
  • See the remains of frescoes in the churches, including the Üzümlü Church with grape motifs.
  • Explore the maze of cave dwellings and storage rooms carved into the cliffside.
