Hevsel Gardens are a tranquil expanse of fertile land stretching along the Tigris River just south of Diyarbakır's ancient walls. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, these gardens have been continuously farmed for at least 8,000 years, providing fresh produce to the city. Visitors can stroll along riverside paths shaded by poplar and willow trees, observe local farmers tending vegetable plots, and enjoy picnics with views of the fortress above. The gardens are also a haven for birdlife, making them a peaceful escape from the urban bustle.
Don't miss
- Walk the riverside trail from the old city down to the gardens for a scenic route.
- Spot migratory birds such as storks and herons in the trees and along the riverbanks.
- Visit in spring when the gardens are lush and wildflowers bloom.
