The Great Mosque of Mahdia is one of the oldest surviving Fatimid mosques, built in 916 AD. Its most striking feature is the monumental entrance, a horseshoe-arched portal flanked by towers, which was revolutionary for its time. Inside, the prayer hall is supported by columns and arches, leading to a simple mihrab. The mosque's design influenced later Islamic architecture across North Africa.

Don't miss

  • The grand entrance portal with its carved stone decoration and twin towers
  • The serene prayer hall with its forest of columns and horseshoe arches
  • The austere mihrab niche, a fine example of early Fatimid craftsmanship
