The Aghlabid Basins are a pair of large stone water cisterns built in the 9th century under the Aghlabid dynasty to supply Kairouan with water. The larger basin, about 128 meters in diameter, once held millions of gallons, with a central tower used for measuring water levels. Today, the site is a tranquil open-air attraction where visitors can walk around the basins, see the ancient water channels, and appreciate the ingenuity of medieval engineering.
Don't miss
- Walk the perimeter of the massive 128-meter-diameter basin
- See the central stone tower used for water measurement
- Observe the ancient aqueduct channels feeding the basins
