Wat Ratchaburana is a historic temple in central Ayutthaya, distinguished by its towering prang (Khmer-style tower) that remains largely intact. Built in the 15th century, the temple's crypt was discovered in the 1950s filled with gold artifacts and murals depicting Buddhist scenes. Visitors can descend into the crypt to see the faded but evocative paintings, then climb the steep interior stairs of the prang for a view over the surrounding ruins. The site's central location and excellent preservation make it a must-see for those interested in Ayutthaya's architectural and artistic heritage.
Don't miss
- Descend into the crypt to view ancient murals and the original treasure chamber.
- Climb inside the prang to see the narrow passageways and enjoy rooftop views.
- Examine the ornate stucco carvings of Garudas and mythical creatures on the prang's exterior.
