Pom Phet, meaning 'Diamond Fortress,' is a 16th-century fortification built by King Maha Chakkraphat to guard the river approach to Ayutthaya. Though partially ruined, the remaining brick walls and bastions evoke the city's former military might. The fort sits at a strategic river junction, providing beautiful panoramic views of the waterways and passing boats. It's a popular spot for photography, especially at sunset, and offers a quiet escape from the main tourist sites. Interpretive signs explain the fort's role in defending against Burmese invasions.
