Ajinateppa, located near Bokhtar, is a significant archaeological site that reveals the region's Buddhist past. Excavations have uncovered the remains of a Buddhist monastery and a large stupa, dating from the 7th to 8th centuries AD, when the area was part of the Kushan Empire. Visitors can see the outlines of monastic cells, courtyards, and the stupa's base, along with fragments of murals and statues (some now in museums). The site offers a quiet, contemplative experience, set against the backdrop of the Tajik countryside, and provides a rare glimpse into Central Asia's pre-Islamic heritage.
