Murghob is a small, windswept settlement in eastern Tajikistan, perched at 3,600 meters in the Pamir Mountains. As the highest town in the country, it serves as a crucial stop for travelers on the legendary Pamir Highway. Visitors experience a raw, lunar-like landscape of barren valleys and snow-capped peaks. The town itself is a simple cluster of houses and a bazaar, but its appeal lies in the surrounding wilderness, ideal for multi-day treks, visiting Kyrgyz yurt camps, and witnessing the extreme resilience of life at altitude. Distinctive for its isolation and as a base for exploring the vast Eastern Pamirs.
Don't miss
- Visit the local bazaar to meet Pamiri and Kyrgyz traders and stock up on supplies.
- Trek into the surrounding valleys, such as the Alichur Valley, for stunning alpine scenery.
- Drive a section of the Pamir Highway, experiencing one of the world's highest and most remote roads.
