The Battle of Apamea in 998 AD was a decisive engagement between the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Basil II and the Fatimid Caliphate. The battlefield lies in the plains near the ancient city, where Fatimid forces launched a surprise assault that routed the Byzantine army. This victory halted Byzantine expansion into Syria for years. Today, the site offers a contemplative landscape of open fields and low hills, with few physical markers but a palpable sense of historical drama.
