Al-Madina Souq is one of the largest covered markets in the Middle East, stretching over 13 kilometers of narrow, stone-vaulted alleys. Dating back to the 14th century, it was a key stop on the Silk Road. Visitors wander through sections dedicated to soap, spices, textiles, and gold, with the scent of Aleppo's famous laurel soap and freshly ground coffee filling the air. The souq's medieval architecture, with its arched ceilings and wooden doors, offers a glimpse into centuries of trade. Despite war damage, many shops have reopened, preserving its vibrant atmosphere.
Don't miss
- Explore the soap section to buy authentic Aleppo laurel soap, a centuries-old specialty.
- Haggle for spices, dried fruits, and nuts in the spice market's aromatic lanes.
- Admire the stone-vaulted ceilings and arched doorways that define the souq's medieval character.
