Grossmünster

Grossmünster, meaning 'Great Minster,' is a iconic Protestant church in Zurich's old town, famous for its twin towers that dominate the city's skyline. According to legend, the church was founded by Charlemagne after his horse knelt at the graves of the city's patron saints. The current building dates from the 13th century and features a Romanesque-Gothic style. Visitors can climb the 187 steps of the Karlsturm tower for a breathtaking view of Zurich, Lake Zurich, and the Alps on clear days. Inside, the church is relatively austere, reflecting Protestant simplicity, but notable features include the stained-glass windows by Augusto Giacometti and the bronze doors by Otto Münch.
