Bahnhofstrasse is the pulsating heart of Zurich's retail and financial life, a mile-long avenue that begins at the Hauptbahnhof and ends at Bürkliplatz on the shores of Lake Zurich. As you stroll along its broad, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, you'll encounter a dazzling array of high-end shops: from Swiss watchmakers like Rolex and Patek Philippe to fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Interspersed are historic department stores like Jelmoli and Globus, as well as chocolate boutiques offering handmade pralines. The street is also the epicenter of Swiss banking, with the headquarters of UBS and Credit Suisse (now part of UBS) flanking the route. Despite its glamour, Bahnhofstrasse has a relaxed, orderly atmosphere, with trams gliding quietly down the center. At the lake end, the square opens up to views of the water and the distant Alps. The street is especially enchanting during the Christmas season when it is adorned with twinkling lights. Whether you're shopping or simply people-watching, Bahnhofstrasse offers a quintessential Zurich experience.
