Vitra Design Museum

The Vitra Design Museum is a premier institution dedicated to design, located in Weil am Rhein, just across the German border from Basel. The museum complex is a destination in itself, featuring buildings by renowned architects including Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Tadao Ando. The main museum building, designed by Gehry, is a sculptural landmark of white plaster and titanium-zinc. Inside, the collection spans furniture, lighting, and industrial objects from the 19th century to the present, with highlights like classic chairs by Charles and Ray Eames, and works by designers such as Alvar Aalto and Verner Panton. The museum also hosts rotating exhibitions on design history and contemporary trends. The surrounding campus includes the Vitra Schaudepot (designed by Herzog & de Meuron) and the VitraHaus, a showroom and café.
