The Zermatt–Sunnegga Funicular is an underground railway that whisks visitors from the center of Zermatt up to Sunnegga, a sunny terrace perched at 2,288 meters. The journey is short but dramatic, as the funicular tunnels through the mountain, emerging onto a plateau bathed in sunlight. At Sunnegga, you'll find the turquoise Leisee lake, perfect for a refreshing dip in summer, and a network of hiking trails that range from easy lakeside strolls to more challenging routes toward the Matterhorn. In winter, the area transforms into a ski and snowboard hub. The funicular's underground design means the ride is smooth and weather-independent, making it a reliable way to access the high alpine scenery. From the terrace, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks, and the family-friendly atmosphere makes it a popular spot for all ages.
