Schwarzsee (meaning 'Black Lake') is a small, deep-green alpine lake situated at 2,561 meters on the south side of the Matterhorn. It is one of the most photographed spots in Zermatt because of the stunning reflection of the Matterhorn on its calm surface. The lake is surrounded by rocky terrain and alpine meadows, with the Hörnlihütte (the starting point for Matterhorn climbers) visible nearby. Visitors can walk around the lake on a short trail, enjoy a meal at the Schwarzsee restaurant, or take a cable car from Schwarzsee to the Trockener Steg and Klein Matterhorn. In summer, the area is a hub for hikers and mountaineers, while in winter it offers ski runs. The lake's vivid color and the dramatic backdrop of the Matterhorn create a scene that feels almost surreal, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Zermatt.

Don't miss

  • Photograph the Matterhorn reflection in the lake
  • Hike the short loop trail around Schwarzsee
  • Visit the nearby Hörnlihütte, base camp for Matterhorn climbers
  • Take the cable car up to Trockener Steg for higher views
  • Enjoy Swiss cuisine at the Schwarzsee mountain restaurant
