Riffelsee is a small, pristine lake situated at 2,757 meters above sea level, just a short walk from the Riffelberg station on the Gornergrat Railway. Its fame comes from the mirror-like reflection of the Matterhorn that appears on its surface when the water is still, creating a postcard-perfect image. The lake is surrounded by rocky terrain and alpine flora, with the Gornergrat ridge and Monte Rosa massif as a backdrop. Visitors typically reach the lake via a gentle hike from Riffelberg or as part of the longer Riffelsee Trail. The best time to see the reflection is early morning or late afternoon when winds are calm. Even without the reflection, the views across the valley toward the Matterhorn are breathtaking. The lake is a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers seeking a serene alpine experience.
