Staubbach Falls is the most iconic of the 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, plunging 297 meters from a hanging valley into the valley floor. The water drops vertically, often dispersing into a fine mist (hence 'Staubbach', meaning 'dust brook') that catches the light and creates rainbows on sunny days. Located just a short walk from Lauterbrunnen village, the falls are visible from the main street and can be approached via a path that leads behind the cascade for a unique perspective. The sight is especially dramatic in spring when snowmelt swells the flow, or after rain. What makes Staubbach Falls distinctive is its sheer height and the way it seems to float down the sheer cliff face, inspiring writers like Goethe and J.R.R. Tolkien. Visitors can combine a stop at the falls with a walk through the valley, exploring other waterfalls like Trümmelbach Falls (inside a mountain). The area is also a base for hiking to Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn.
