Schadau Castle is a romantic, neo-Gothic castle built between 1846 and 1854 for the Swiss banker Abraham Kunz. It sits on the shores of Lake Thun, surrounded by a sprawling English-style park with ancient trees, manicured lawns, and flowerbeds. Unlike the medieval Thun Castle, Schadau is a 19th-century fantasy of a castle, complete with turrets, battlements, and a lakeside terrace. Today, it operates as a restaurant and event space, so visitors can enjoy a meal or a drink on the terrace with direct views of the lake and the Alps. The park is open to the public year-round and is a popular spot for leisurely strolls, picnics, and photography. The castle's interior is not open for general touring except during special events, but the exterior and grounds are free to explore.
