Randen (mountain range)

The Randen is a gently undulating mountain range that stretches north of Schaffhausen into Germany. Unlike the dramatic Alpine peaks, Randen is characterized by rounded summits, deep green forests, open meadows, and scattered farms. The highest point, Hagen, reaches about 912 meters, providing sweeping views over the Rhine Valley, the Black Forest, and on clear days, the Alps. The area is crisscrossed by a network of well-marked hiking and mountain biking trails, making it a favorite escape for locals seeking fresh air and tranquility. In spring and summer, the meadows are carpeted with wildflowers, while autumn brings vibrant foliage. Several rustic inns (Gasthöfe) along the trails offer hearty Swiss-German cuisine and local wines. The Randen is also home to the Siblinger Randen nature reserve, where rare orchids and bird species thrive. For a moderate day trip from Schaffhausen, you can hike from the village of Schleitheim to the summit of Hagen and back, enjoying the serene landscape and perhaps spotting deer or foxes. The range's gentle slopes and clear trails also make it suitable for families with children.
